The HECS suit advantage is a substantial edge for any hunter when trying to get closer to game animals or just keep the environment around them calm and serene.
But like with any technology there are limits to what a person can reasonably expect as well as some tricks and tactics that will help you be more successful in the hunting woods.
In this blog, I would like to share a few tips that will help you get the most from your HECS system.
The number one best advice I always tell new HECS users is this- Add HECS technology to your regular hunting apparel and then keep using your proven effective hunting tactics.
You may have seen some incredible encounters with HECS on the TV show and other videos but I always recommend starting by just adding HECS technology and hunting the same way you always have and notice the differences.
Then as you become more accustomed to what is possible with HECS you can push the boundaries a bit at a time.
Keep in mind that HECS suits only affects 2 parts of the animals’ sensory perception system and that is his electrical energy defense with the HECS patented grid and his visual perception with the HECStyle camo pattern to the extent that it helps you blend into your surroundings visually (if you are wearing HECS on the outside).
A deer for instance still has incredible hearing and their nose is second to none so you will still need to be very quiet, and you must keep the wind in your favor.
If you normally hunt in an elevated stand to keep the wind in your favor you should definitely continue to do so. If you use a ground blind you should start out using it as well.
As you get more experience with HECS hunting gear you may want to push outside of the blind or try more aggressive stalks.
Experience with the technology is the best teacher when it comes to knowing where your personal limit is when using a HECS hunting suit with different species.
With that said, most people are surprised when they do learn just how much more they can get away with when using HECS technology.
If you watch very many HECS videos you will see that with some species most notably turkeys we are regularly hunting without a blind and just sitting out and still being extremely successful even with archery gear.
While I have been successful with virtually no cover at all, by far the better way to set up to hunt this way is to sit where you have some natural back cover to help break up your visual silhouette.
You don’t need to hide behind any solid object but rather set up right in front of a tree, rock or some other natural object.
I really like cedar trees when I have them as they generally have thick limbs that go all the way to the ground and offer excellent back cover. I also like to be in the shade whenever possible again just to help aid the visual camo side of the equation.
These same rules apply when setting up a hunting stand for deer elk and other species as well. Here is a video tip I did for setting up to bow hunt turkeys without a blind-
HECS technology is a major advantage for the spot and stalk hunter as well. Again in stalking, you need to use all the natural advantages that you would in any stalking situation.
You want to stay out of sight as much as possible, stalk silently, and always keep the wind in your favor. When HECS helps in a big way is those moments when you are exposed to the animal.
First, off you will find that they don’t pick you out nearly as quickly as you are previously accustomed and when they do if you simply hold still most of the time the animal; will stare for 30 to 90 seconds and then dismiss you and go back to their normal activity.
Then you can continue your stalk and get that shot you are looking for. Remember stalking takes extreme discipline and patience but adding HECS to your arsenal will make it much easier. There is one other tactic that is only possible with HECS technology and to most hunters, it sounds pretty crazy but we have seen it as a viable “last-ditch” type tactic when all other chances are lost.
Believe it or not, we have had pretty consistent success particularly with mule deer but we have seen it work with whitetail as well. The tactic- just simply walking slowly toward deer in open fields. Yes, this can work and we have been successful several times when all else fails.
The trick to this tactic (besides having the wind right and walking quietly) is first to be sure the deer are not already alerted to you when they enter the field. You cannot for instance get out of your truck and walk at the deer and expect this to get you very close (I actually had a disgruntled customer call us and was disappointed that he couldn’t do this successfully.
He actually thought he was invisible to the deer wearing HECS, which of course is not the case. But if you are positioned at the field edge and the deer are not otherwise aware you are there and you have the wind right, sometimes you can simply stand fully upright, keep your hands to your side or hold your weapon directly in front of you (basically so you don’t have arms visible outside your main body line) and walk slowly directly at the deer.
When the deer looks in your direction, simply stop and wait for them to give up (which usually happens pretty quickly if the deer is going to be approachable).
When they do continue to move in, always directly at the deer or at a slight forward angle if the deer are feeding in a particular direction (this is to help you intersect the deer and not end up way behind). Many times you will be surprised at how close you can get if you are patient and deliberate.
I must stress this will not work with every deer in every situation and the longer the distance that you need to cover the harder it is, but with your electrical energy field removed many times deer have a seriously difficult time telling what you are and it also seems that it throws their depth perception off as well.
It is a tactic worth remembering if you find yourself in a situation where there are no other options. Here are a few videos showing this tactic working.
HECS technology is an incredible advantage in almost any hunting situation. I hope these tips will help you understand how to use HECS more effectively on your next hunt!
